To start 2024 at Mystical Moments Photography, we thought it would be nice to write a little about self-care and some of the things you can do to love yourself more this year. We have all heard of retail therapy and as we all know money doesn't always stretch far enough from a personal perspective, buying loads of things you probably didn't need does not help all that much so here are some ideas on how you can be a little kinder to yourself in 2024.

  1. Waking up earlier

We aren't all early-morning people but waking up early is scientifically proven to boost mood, memory and attention span. Now you're up early there’s more time to get things done. Get dressed and get ready for the day.

2. Spend time in nature

Researchers say spending time outside helps with conditions such as anxiety, and depression and aids in lowering blood pressure. Whether it's relaxing in your garden or a nice walk along the beach or in your local forest. Read, colour, draw or do puzzles whatever helps take your mind off your stress and creates calm. Being in the sun is a bonus as you will create more vitamin D.

3. Taking care of your body

Changing your diet and cooking with fresh ingredients is guaranteed to boost your mood and your physical health. Having plenty of water, fruits, vegetables and meats all contribute to different parts of our bodies and all have a wide range of effects. Fast food is full of sugar, salts, saturated fats, trans fats, processed ingredients and calories. All of these will affect your mood, your brain and your body. Weight gain is also a factor which also leads to mental health problems. Grab a recipe book from the charity shop or google your favourite TV chefs.

4. Hygiene

Keeping on top of general hygiene such as brushing hair, bathing/showering, brushing teeth etc. These are all really small things you can do to take care of your body which also in hand takes care of your mind. You don't have to spend money to take care of yourself.

5. General cleanliness and tidiness

Keeping your personal spaces clean and tidy can do so many positive things for your mental and physical health. Not only will your health benefit, but having a nice space to live offers the opportunity to be more productive. It will also allow you to have guests over, and they will be more comfortable in your homely inviting space. You can be proud of where you live and not be embarrassed. We all know the feeling of letting things slip in the home and feeling as though you're being judged by your guests. We find it more practical to clean in the evening once all our daily tasks are done.

6. Have a spa day

If you're someone with the time to have a spa day every couple of weeks, take advantage of that. Have a nice bath or shower, and maybe even brave the leg shave. Grab yourself some nice moisturiser, face pack and foot pack. You could even be really fancy and wear some nice underwear or pyjamas. Grab a book or puzzle and spend the day making sure your mind and body are looked after. A typical spa day for us at Mystical Moments is locking our doors, relaxing in the bath with some good music, reading a good book or watching our favourite TV show with a cup of tea or coffee. We like to tell ourselves positive and kind words throughout the day just to get ourselves into a peaceful headspace.

7. Spending time with family

Although our depression may sometimes advocate isolation. We think getting out and seeing the people who love and support you can make a dramatic difference, not only will this change your mood and outlook on the day, but it will also give you the opportunity to talk to someone and maybe even ask for a little advice on things you're struggling with.

8. Be kind to yourself

Be kinder to your mind and your body. We can spend a whole chunk of our lives feeling useless and not good enough but sometimes we are just too wrapped up in what we aren't doing and we forget to acknowledge what we are doing. Take time to reflect, learn and appreciate yourself this year more than you ever have.

It is really important not to be too hard on yourself, what one person is capable of may not be the same as another person. We all have different needs, mentally and physically. Pay attention to those needs and identify what you need to get you through. All of our routines are different and it's good to find out what works best for you.

At Mystical Moments we believe learning to love and care for yourself is one of the most important things you can do every day. Thank you so much for reading our personal self-care guide and we hope you found it practical and interesting. We are always here for a chat if you feel you need someone to talk to.
